I really didn't know how to start this blog and what show was I going to do the review on. Then I remembered Shokugeki no Soma aka Food Wars. A show so amazing that I even got my dad hooked to it and we will watch it together everyday while we ate lunch. A show that introduced us to characters that we will never forget, a show that showed us how fun cooking is, a show that showed us that no matter how fucked up our situation might get we have to rise up to the occasion and fight.
Shokugeki no Soma is an anime based of a manga from the same name. A manga written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki that was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump on November 2012 and has been being published ever since. Thanks to the success of the Shonen Jump magazine in 2015, Shokugeki no Soma got an anime. J.C Staff studios took the challenge and with Yoshimoto Yonetani a well known director from Japan, together they decided to produce one of the best comedy, slice of life and shonen series of all time.
Synopsis:
Yukihira Soma our protagonist is a fifteen year old teenager who loves cooking, having grown up in a diner next to his father his whole life revolves around cooking. His dream? To be a better chef than his father and be the very own chef of his family's restaurant. One day his father decides to close down Yukihira Diner and go travel the world to test his culinary skills, he sends Soma to the most prestigious Culinary school in Japan, Tootsuki Culinary Academy. When Soma arrives at this prestigious school he finds out that it is the real deal, this school only has a 10% success rate, and that means less than 10% of the students graduate. Yukihira Soma takes this as a challenge and is ready to take on the amazing yet scary Tootsuki Academy.
Could Yukihira Soma survive this Academy?
When you ask someone what makes a story good, mostly everyone will answer that a complex story will always be better than a simple one, but Shokugeki no Soma is a clear example that simple is best. Shokugeki no Soma is in no means a masterpiece. But this show has a good developed story with amazing character who mostly of the introduced characters get their own time to shine and don't get left out. When this story starts we know the goal of Yukihira Soma and as the series goes on he doesn't lose focus on that objective, along the way he gets new goals but the main goal, he never forgets about it.
The reason why I started watching this anime was because of the cooking and the food involved in it, the show did this perfectly they knew how to engaged the audience with beautiful animated plates and I would think I am not the only one but I had to watch this show while I was eating something because otherwise I would start getting hungry. Shokugeki no Soma gives you the same feeling as when you watch cooking shows and you see all that food porn, with the show describing what kind of dish they are making/eating so you know every little detail about it and your mouth starts to drool, and then you get the orgasmic reactions of the characters when they taste the food and it makes you even more hungry.

Now that I mentioned before the orgasmic reactions of the characters towards the food I will go more in depth about it. I enjoyed since the very beginning each and every scene related to the reactions. Shokugeki no Soma is a show under the genre "Ecchi" which is a word used to describe sexual actions, so when you start watching this show you should have in my mind that
some sexual actions. I have read some reviews about this topic some people really like it, some people really hate it, in my
opinion I don't see anything wrong with it. In the first episodes I got the shock of my life when these scenes happened but as the show went on I got used to them and I think that's what happened to most of the people who have watched this show. As the show went on they toned down the number of orgasmic scenes, as well as the tone of each scene, but I found myself missing the over the top reactions from the very first episodes, this scenes became the comedy relief for many people, you would end up laughing at how funny and ridiculous they looked.
I really don't like writing about a show that hasn't finished yet but because this show holds a special place in my heart and because the third seasons finished not long ago, and they left us with an open ending I decided to unwind in here. Season Three ending was ridiculous, one thing is to left a show open but to cut a whole season in the middle of a Shokugeki is stupid. The last half of season three was the road to have the Shokugeki against the Elite 10, but the Shokugeki only started in the last 3 episodes, they could have waited and aired those 3 episodes in the 4th season and have the whole arc together than giving us 3 episodes and then make us wait I don't know how long.
But in conclusion, Shokugeki no Soma is a really good show, with a lot of comedy, a lot of food to make you hungry and a lot of amazing characters that you will end up loving and caring for.
Animation:
All of the people who have read the manga or at least have seen any pictures from it knew it would be impossible to do such a beautiful work in the anime. But to my surprised and that of many J.C Staff knew how to defend themselves and put out an anime worth looking at. When it came to decide what they were going to put most of the effort to animate I think it was quite obvious. The characters are normal looking, and the background is also mostly normal. So where did they put so much effort to animate? The dishes. The food being detailed with such a care in the show by the characters when they were describing it, but what is what people notice first, how it looks. If we don't like how something looks we don't pay it attention, the colours in this show are bright but not too bright that you would say is almost annoying, and when you look at this dishes the first thing you would think is how amazing must it taste.
Personal:
When I started watching this show I didn't know what I was getting myself into, It was just going to be one of those shows I would watch when I was bored but no, this show got me hooked to it and I think mostly had to do with the characters instead of the plot. For me this is a show were secondary characters get the same love as the main ones, my favourite characters are secondary characters, Terunori Kuga and Satoshi Isshiki.
If you by chance stopped watching this show I would like to tell you to go back and start watching it again this show is the one show that deserves a second chance. It is a simple show nothing too complicated and you won't have to think much when watching it just disconnect and have fun. Some laughs and food.
Enjoy and watch Shokugeki no Soma!
